Ashtanga Yoga
Ashtanga yoga is a system of yoga transmitted to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009). Jois claimed to have learnt the system from his teacher Krishnamacharya.
Ashtanga Yoga is an energetic style of yoga, a physically demanding practice that synchronises breath with a series of postures to produce an intense internal heat designed to purify the body. Also, it improves circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.
Through this practice of correct breathing (Ujjayi Pranayama), postures (asanas), and gazing point (driste), we gain control of the senses and a deep awareness of our selves. By maintaining this discipline with regularity and devotion, one acquires steadiness of body and mind.
”Ashtanga” literally means eight limbs. They are described by Patanjali as: Yama (abstinences), Niyama (Observances, rules, and guidelines), Asana (postures), Pranayama (breath control), Pratyahara (sense withdrawal), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (contemplation).
